Bonfire Through Trees

Bonfire Through Trees
The flames were around 30 feet high!

I took this in 2003 with my old Olympus C4000. It was hand-held with a 1 second exposure. I think I might have been walking at the time. The fire is like 150 feet away and the tree silhouette on the left is like 75 feet away to give you some scale on the size of the bonfire.

I have done no editing (other than the watermark), and I really like how it looks almost more like a painting than a photograph.

Imperfect

A lot of photos don’t turn out. They have various technical problems like focus, exposure, etc. However every once in a while you get one that is technically bad, but it still works. Here is an example:

Imperfect

I don’t think any part of the flower is in focus, it was probably inside the minimum focal distance for the lens (I don’t have a macro lens), and some parts also look over exposed, but I still really like how it turned out. The colors are so vivid, it kinda screams at you. It almost has a painted quality to it. For some reason, it just seems to work. I’m currently using it as a desktop background.

Or it’s just a bad photo that I’m rationalizing into a good photo. 😉

Photo Challenge: Connecting

I entered a photo challenge on dpreview.com. The challenge is:

Enter images which show people forming some of bond or connection. It can be as simple as a couple holding hands or a parent playing with a child, or more involved such as a group meeting or sports fans cheering their team. The important thing is to show a strong connection or bond between the subjects.

The voting starts on Sunday. You can vote for Andrew here.

How can a baby that cute not win?

Catching a bullet…

This past weekend was Easter. I’m hoping we started a new tradition of shooting guns on Easter because it was fun! We shot some clays and messed around with Anthony’s S&W MP9 and Rossi 357. Since I just recently got a new DSLR I’ve been taking a lot of pictures. I had an idea to set it to continuous drive and have Anthony empty the clip as fast as he could and maybe we’d get some cool shots. Well, it turned out awesome. I ended up catching a bullet streaking through the frame. At 1/1000 of a second shutter speed a bullet traveling about 1500 ft/s should move about 1.5 feet, and you can see the streak the bullet left. Too bad it wasn’t still in the frame or it would have been even cooler.

I shot this with my Canon T2i/550D and 50mm F/1.8 lens.

If we do this again, and we probably will, I’m going to try a faster shutter speed to see if I can actually catch the bullet. Maybe I’ll try to borrow a faster lens too, another stop would help.
